Katie Bee Creative bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

My name is Katie Watson and I live in Southern California.  I'm married to a Navy Pilot so we have traveled the country coast to coast calling many different states our home. I am a Mom to 3 children and 2 cats. I am on the Design Team for Maya Road which I Love, Love, Love!! I love vintage anything and everything...I would rather rummage then organize and am just plain happy when I'm doing some form of art! I love mini books and altered projects and would describe my style as shabby chic mixed with thrift store randomness.

~$5 Garage Sale Americana Folk Art Score and a few more of my favorite finds~

If there is one thing that I am addicted to, it is other peoples cast offs……..seriously,  the saying “One persons trash is another persons treasure” is almost my motto.

It drives my husband CRAZY!

He is a simple man, just needs the basics, he is into throwing stuff away or donating it to the thriftstore that he doesn’t need or doesn’t fit in his current living situation.

I, on the other hand, am the exact opposite.  I drive super slow on trash day (you would be amazed at what people throw away), I pace the house on Saturday mornings that I am not going to garage sales (which unfortunately is most Saturday mornings), I stay up late looking at Craigs List (even though I have only bought 2 things from it) and I am constantly checking ebay…and don’t even get me started on the Goodwill…oh my, that is a post on it’s own.

If I could figure out how to make a living on these things, I would…but only if I could find somebody to do the hard work, I just want to do the shopping and the bargain finding.

Some of my most favorite things got their start in somebody elses life. Which is fine by me, I am all about blended families!!

So, that brings me to today’s post.  Two Saturday’s ago, Cory (my 18 year old son) and I went to garage sales.  We had so much fun!  He got a very, very cool antique kaleidoscope (don’t ask me how the kids figured out how to take a picture of the inside of the kaleidoscope but they did).

I got a few things but my favorite thing was this vintage picture.  To me, this is a classic piece of Americana Folk Art.  $5, people….$5!  I loved it at first sight but after closer examination, I am totally in love with it.  It is so clever. By the way, those are not stains, just shadows.

It needs a new mat and frame, which means that I will be painting the frame and figuring out how to fix the mat to make it prettier…I’ll keep you posted on that.

I just LOVE how the person who made this created something to represent each state.  It is very interesting.

I’m not going to take the time to type out each thing because you can see them yourselves.

I do have to point out the Canadian Geese for Canada, pretty clever.

This picture that is on my fireplace mantle is one of my favorites and my WHOLE living room, wall color and everything is based off of this picture.  I’m not kidding.  I keep meaning to research this picture to see if I can find out anything about its origins but haven’t had time yet.

Yep, I kept the tag on…….I had too…I don’t know why..but I guess I needed proof that I really did only pay $1.95 for it.  Crazy.

The scale was from a thrift store.  The window was $5 from an antique store in TX (That place has got some kick butt prices on antiques, much cheaper then CA.) which is why I bought about 10 windows before we left TX.  Smarty pants huh?

This little calendar thingy……….nope that is not dust.  Ummmmmmmm.

The bottle of Camphor is from a garage sale last weekend…$2.  Sorry the picture is so dark.  The off white metal piece is from a thrift store also.  The jar behind it, I dug up from an old dump in Montana.

The crock and Oar are from a garage sale….the candle, candle stick and little house (it lights up) are from the thrift store.

and one more that is one of my most favorite of all time……and it was also only $5 and came in the black frame.  I wonder who all these guys were and when this picture was taken…? We love this picture!

December 14, 2009 - 2:19 pm mimi panormios - Hi Katie :) This post sure brought a smile to my face!!! I too am a collecter of things no longer wanted---I call them my curb-side treasures. My husband on the other hand calls it shabby @#$%. I told him oh no honey, you mean shabby chic (heheheh) I have been known to turn the car around to rescue wonderful chairs, wire baskets and little wooden stools from the grips of the garbage men. Maybe that should be my next career--a garbage woman. What treasures I could bring home then :) Thanks for sharing your wonderful treasures!!! Mimi~
